I thought I would share this amazing encounter with you.
My buddy Don Wills was visiting last month (August) and we had been out
fishing and were bringing the boat into shore. Our neighbor Jake was on
shore moving rocks around at his new boat launch. Don saw something on
shore and was asking if it was a dog or what, but I couldn't see it until we
got very close to our dock, then we both realized it was a baby deer laying
on the shore watching Jake - not ten feet from where he was tossing rocks
around! We watched it for awhile and it never took its eyes off Jake
(photos 1&2), even after he left to go get his phone and snap these photos.
However, when we docked the boat the fawn got up and ran right at us and
under our dock. It tried to run between the dock and the pontoon boat, so
Don stamped his foot on the dock to stop it as it could get crushed between
them and we didn't want to see it get wetter as it wasn't that warm out. It
turned and stopped under the dock at the back of the boat where I was
unhooking the trolling motor - not 2' away from me! It was shaking like a
leaf from the cold and fear, so I started talking to it in a low, calm voice
asking where its mother was and how it got here, just trying to sooth and
calm it down. It stared at me from a few feet away with its big beautiful
brown eyes, tilted its head and actually stopped shaking - as if it
understood what I was saying! However, when I lifted the trolling motor
onto the dock, it ran towards the steeper shoreline (photo 3). We then
noticed that it was favoring its back left leg, so we all decided to leave
and hopefully it would hear its mother calling and when we came back after
10 minutes it was gone. Jake said he saw it later on, with its mother and
it looked perfectly fine, although it is very late in the year for it to
still be so small.
