I Visited Lake Clear Yesterday...

6/8/2017

... for the first time in many years. For decades my family rented a cottage from the Goulet family, at the end of what is now French's Road. I am attaching some photos I took.

Question 1: whatever happened to Stricklands right at the corner of 512 and Sand Road? I saw the site was completely empty. We used to stop there after forgetting things at the grocery store in town.

Question 2: There used to be a farm with a small creek running close by in a small valley on the right hand side of highway 512 between Eganville and the Lake Clear Road. My father used to stop our car there and buy bait fish, shiners, from the farmer who used to trap them in the stream. The stream ran under the road. I remember it well as one year our dog Dinty unfortunately got out of the car and killed two of the farmer's chickens. There was a ruckus about that! Dad had to fork over a few bucks to calm the old fellow down. I could find no trace of any such farm when twice driving the 512. Any idea of where it was and/or what happened to it? Cheers,

Comments from our LCPOA Facebook Group:
From Paul Rene de Cotret:
Strickland closed to relocate and EXPAND(!!!) at the other end of Eganville (big IgA) near the road leading to Pembroke (about 15 years ago (?). The original Strickland was demolished and now seems to be a vacant lot.
In front of Strickland, there used to be a store selling fireplaces: it burned down !!!
I've been going up to Lake Clear for my summer vacation almost every year since I was 8 yrs old...I'm now 63 !
Colleen Beanish:
I too have been coming to the lake every summer for years - since 1962. I remember the old Stricklands well. We used to be given our weekly allowance to spend while Mom got groceries for the weekend. I always looked forward to a chocolate bar, chips, an ice cream cone and/or an Archie comic.
Jim Douglas:
As I recall, Henry Strickland sold the grocery to Ron Nelson who continued to operate out of the original store for a few years. Ron got an IGA franchise and moved to the modern and larger store on 41.
Don't forget the sticky buns
Colleen:
Good point, Jim. How could one forget the sticky buns...and good old fashioned homemade bread!
Paul:
Yeeaahh ! The buns !!!

Thanks! I really liked Stricklands when I was a kid. It was smaller and more personal at the big grocery store where we had shopped earlier, almost always, and then forgot something important so we went to Stricklands on the way to the Lake! Cheers to all, Brenda

My grandparents, Conrad & Edna Schroeder, owned a cottage on Lake Clear for several years back in the late 1950's to the late 1960's until my grandfather passed away and my grandmother sold it. I would love to find out if the place still stands. Can anyone help me find out? It would be greatly appreciated as my brothers and I would love to bring back memories of the place.
Many thanks.
