After the lake froze and there was no snow on it, we were out with family and had great fun "sliding into the new year". The first photo was taken earlier from Wieland Shore when the lake first froze and French's Island is reflected in the ice. The others were taken on the 1st and 2nd of January just before the snow arrived and spoiled our ice rink.

Winter is slowly coming to the lake. Little Lake Clear has frozen over completely once, completely thawed and now frozen over again. Lake Clear, on the other hand, has not frozen over yet.
For the past week there have been numerous different sorts of ice formation, but no complete cover. Yesterday morning there were 7 different lake surfaces visible from our window, all very finely differentiated, it was quite remarkable. From the land out we had; 1. shoreline ice, about a week old, covered with 5 cm. of snow and saturated with water running off the land, light grey. 2. shoreline ice, covered with snow but completely dry, snow white. 3. shoreline ice, covered with only a couple of cm. of ice and quite patchy with snow and clear sections of wet ice. 4. open water on top of thin ice, absolutely smooth. 5. New ice with the light dusting of snow we had last night. 6. Open water, absolutely smooth changing quickly to gently wind swept. 7. Older ice that had migrated and collided with standing ice, generating ridges, snowy patches and pools of open water. This morning it is mostly open water. There is some shoreline ice, except for the western shallow end which is ice covered. With no hard freeze forecast, this remarkable display might continue for a few more days. This morning we awoke to a flock of two dozen turkeys which fed all around the house...I think I recognize a few of them from the Senate!
