While snowmobiling along Shepherd's Way, Danny Felhaber noticed a dark lump in the snow that looked odd. On further inspection he discovered it to be a water bird he had never seen before. He took it to our resident bird expert and was told it was a juvenile Red Necked Grebe. Definitely rare for around here and definitely rare for this time of year with no open water to hunt in.
Tammy called the Bird Sanctuary in Ottawa and they said to bring it in. They will check it out and release it if possible. There was nothing the matter with its appetite, as it ate a dozen of Danny's minnows.
It is the consensus that it got blown in our direction from the strong winds we had the day before, possibly from the Ottawa River.
